Graduate Vocal Coaching and Accompanying Audition Requirements

Graduate Vocal Coaching and Accompanying Audition Requirements

Graduate Audition Requirements:

  • No Solo component
  • Play a Beethoven violin sonata movement (sonata requirement tentative, more details forthcoming*)
  • *Sing and play two contrasting arts songs in languages other than English (only one for non-major assistantship auditions)
  • Sing and play the Sprecher scene from Mozart’s The Magic Flute (In German)
  • Play “No word from Tom…I go, I go to him” from Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress
  • *Sing and play the First Act of Puccini’s La Bohème until Colline’s entrance
  • *Play “Look at me Now” from Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party

In addition, each applicant should submit a repertory list of the vocal and instrumental (winds and strings) accompanying what they have done on their Graduate Application. Include ensemble, chamber music, choral accompanying, and any experience with opera or music theatre. The vocal repertory need not be detailed and specific by titles, but should be represented in terms of composers covered. This will aid in determining divisional and studio assignments should an assistantship be awarded.

Recorded Audition Information:

Applicants who choose to submit a recording in lieu of live auditions should video record all of the selections above. Recorded auditions will be followed up with a virtual interview/audition. Applicants should have access to a keyboard, and a printer or device to read music as sight-reading will be required. Audition recordings can be uploaded directly to the Graduate College application, and are due January 15th.

Graduate Aid Funding Information:

All prospective Vocal Coaching and Accompanying (VCA) students who complete an audition will automatically be considered for accompanying teaching assistantships.

Auditions for non-VCA majors will be heard at the discretion of the VCA faculty, provided there are available openings and that applicants demonstrate sufficient accompanying experience through their repertoire lists and résumés. If invited for an audition, applicants must include the audition items marked with an asterisk above.
